Such distortion leads to incorrect generalizations and false patterns. The Essence of the Phenomenon The problem lies in the fact that information about failures is often unavailable or less noticeable. We see winners, but not losers. As a result, a distorted picture of reality is formed, in which success seems more likely and natural than it actually is. The term emerged during World War II when researchers analyzed the damage to returning aircraft. They wanted to strengthen the areas that were most often hit by bullets. However, statistician Abraham Wald pointed out that it was necessary to reinforce the areas where there were no bullet holes — that is where the aircraft that did not return had been hit. Examples In business, the survivorship bias manifests in success stories that are disseminated as universal recipes. We read about entrepreneurs who dropped out of university and became billionaires, but we do not see the thousands who did the same and went bankrupt. In medicine, this manifests in the assessment of the effectiveness of treatment: surviving patients may demonstrate certain characteristics, but this does not mean that these characteristics are the cause of survival.
